Packaging food to be distributed by the Food Bank for Westchester
Since 1988, the Food Bank for Westchester has been distributing food to the hungry across Westchester County in New York. The Food Bank began with a man, a van and a small room. Today, the Westchester Food Bank serves over 265 local hunger-relief programs including food pantries, soup kitchens, child and adult daycare centers and shelters.
Maria Ciraco, one of the Project Leaders for Global Day of Giving got involved with the Food Bank by asking if they could use XL Catlin’s help. “We’re the same group that keeps going back year after year. The Food Bank’s staff really enjoy having our group come each year, and we really feel good about helping. They’re a great organization, and we wish we could do more for them.”
The volunteers work as a team to achieve the goals set for them by the Food Bank. One project was packaging frozen meat, flour and fruit ready for distribution. “Working on this project has really opened our eyes to what is going on in our community. We didn’t realize how many hungry people there were, right in our back yard.” The team of volunteers wants to continue to help the organization with whatever they need.
