Promoting career choices to East London students
As part of XL Catlin’s Global Day of Giving the London office invited a number of students from Tower Hamlets College to attend a Careers Day. The College is a further education college that is spread across four sites in the East End of London, with a large proportion of students from an ethnic minority background.
The Careers Day involved CV-writing workshops, interview skills workshops, a Lloyd’s of London tour and a chance to interact with and learn from a number of employees about their own career choices and backgrounds. It was aimed at informing students of the different career options available to them in the London (re)insurance market.
The company’s involvement with Towers Hamlets College has been in tandem with some of its other recent charitable work in the area, with recent volunteering activities organised by the East London Business Alliance (ELBA), involving over 90 employees volunteering for local projects.
“This was an opportunity to help young adults learn more about the insurance market and a number of career options that they may have never considered before,” says Jamie Taylor, the Project Leader. “I think it also helped to raise an awareness of diversity in the London insurance market.”
Jamie adds he hadn’t fully appreciated the multitude of tasks that would be involved in organizing such a day, but nonetheless has “a real feeling of pride that we managed to gain an enthusiastic response from the students… it’s important to take a step back from the day job every now and again and appreciate what we have and how we can help others that aren’t as lucky.”
