Building better futures for slum children
Reason to Smile aims to assist underprivileged children with basic and vocational education to make them self-dependent as they grow up. The program is part of the Slum Children Education and Development Trust, an organization which XL Catlin in India has supported for over five years through the Global Day of Giving.
The relationship with the Trust started with a small team of volunteers from the Finance department. Now, around 75-100 employees take part in the project.
The volunteers usually participate in a range of education activities and games with the children, including drawing and painting, career counselling, and puppet shows. They also help provide school uniforms, stationery and books to let them continue with their education.
“I am proud to be associated with this project,” says Project Leader Sonal Kejriwal. “This whole experience has made me realize how we can use a little from our ample resources, be it in the form of money, efforts or time to make a difference to someone else’s life.”
The volunteer team has also gained a lot from their involvement, Sonal adds: “Colleagues have learned to extend the concept of giving not only to these children but in their regular day-to-day affairs as well, be it in the personal or in the professional sphere of their lives. It has helped them appreciate the importance of team work, collaboration and being accountable which is the foundation for being a great leader.”
Sonal and the team plan to continue their support for these underprivileged children to help them build a better future.
